What I Wish I Knew About Bronzer as a Black Girl

I’m a black woman who grew up in a mostly white suburbia. As you can imagine, I heard things, almost daily, that made me question my identity. I frequently heard people I went to school with talk about laying out and tanning in an attempt to get “as dark as me.” Back then, and even still today, being tan was one of the many beauty industry standards that trickled its way down to little high school me who just wanted to get her hands on as much makeup as she could. And the only makeup I had access to was the dollar store makeup and my mom’s brown lipstick was way past its usability (according to her it was still perfectly good).

Advertisements

Unfortunately, products like bronzer, which helped women achieve that “dark as me” look that was all the rage, seemed to exclude me from the narrative that makeup was for everyone. At the drugstore, I wasn’t able to find shades that fit my skin tone. The shelves were only filled with products for fair to medium-skinned people, and no one else. I wanted to try it but it wasn’t a priority for businesses to cater to people who looked like me. The complete lack of bronzers for people with my skin color made me feel weirdly othered from something I had an interest in.

Bronzer’s main job is to mimic where the sun hits your face—a concept I couldn’t grasp even after watching hours of beauty content on YouTube. Additionally, I could never get past the mental block that years of being told not to let the sun hit my face cemented in my mind. If anything, I am a rule follower to a fault. However, it was colorism that kept me from trying it for so long. Letting the long-term effects of racism and prejudice judge how I used something as simple as a new makeup product. Who knew it would be that deep? And even worse, it made me feel like I was trying to be someone else.

Bronzer continued to be one of those steps in my makeup routine that I avoided. First, I didn’t know what it was for. Then, it felt like it was too late to learn. It felt like a stranger, when doing makeup had always felt like a close friend. Something that bonded me to my mom, my sister, and my friends.

Education became the key. Specifically, watching and learning from makeup artists of color put me in the position to feel like I could try it and succeed. I turned to artists like Danessa Myricks and Pat McGrath who always celebrated makeup for women of color. I know I can’t be alone in these feelings and they’re not exclusive to bronzer. So, to my fellow Black girls and any readers who have experienced the fatigue of not being able to find a bronzer that fits in your routine, there are products out there for you. Go out and find the brands that are working hard to be inclusive and bring more makeup lovers into the fold. But before you do that, here’s what I wish someone would have told me about bronzer all those years ago:

What I Wish I Knew About Bronzer as a Black Girl

@leomieanderson, @tatianaelizabethh//Instagram

It brings warmth back into the face

As someone who was very into the huge Tarte Shape Tape triangle method of concealer application (IYKYK), I know a thing or two about brightening the face. What I didn’t know is that when you brighten you also need something to counter that effect. Bronzer is key in adding back that sun-kissed glow. Anytime you put on makeup, it’s about striking the right balance of highlights and shadows. Starting here is the best way to create your best complexion routine.

PRIMP TIP: Use a cream or powder bronzer with the right undertones (aka zero percent orange) for dark skin and you’ll be golden—literally.

A little goes a long way

The first bronzers I ever bought was Fenty’s Bronzer ( I still highly recommend this) and Anastasia Beverly Hills Powder Bronzer. At the time, Anastasia was one of the few brands that carried darker bronzer shades for people with my skin tone. Of course, when I first tried it I went way too heavy-handed (let’s just say “sun-kissed glow” was an understatement). Seriously, I looked like I’d been left in a toaster oven while the chef took a smoke break. To avoid this, I use a light hand and in the words of every beauty influencer on TikTok, found a product that’s “super buildable.”

Practice makes perfect

This is a cliché but it’s a worthy one! It took practice to figure out that it only takes a little to create the perfect bronzy look that we’re all going for. The right tools go hand in hand with this as well, whether that’s a sponge, a brush, or your fingers. Taking your time also helps. I recommend using your next “do nothing” day as an opportunity to practice your application. In time, you’ll become a pro!

Makeup is for everyone

This is more of a gentle reminder I have to give myself from time to time. Makeup is more art than you might think. We’ve seen an incredible rise in people from all shades and backgrounds who create amazing looks. And the unbridled joy I get from just trying out products serves as that reminder. It’s always good to remember that at the end of the day, makeup is supposed to be fun. I no longer want to give that much power to an industry that was born to prey on our natural insecurities in the first place. We are beautiful and worthy no matter what we decide to put on our faces every day. The industry has its issues but at the end of the day, it’s the consumer and wearer who gets to define what is for you and what isn’t.

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oils

Selena Gomez cracked the liquid-blush code with the Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Blush. In record time, the velvety, long-lasting formula went from if-you-know-you-know status to becoming so popular, you can’t scroll TikTok without seeing a Get Ready With Me of someone dotting the chubby doe-foot applicator on their cheeks and blending the pigment out to flushed perfection.

Advertisements

Now, the beloved blush is getting a sibling in the form of Soft Pinch Lip Oil ($20) in eight shades. Given the stellar reputation of its predecessor, the brand-new formula had a lot to live up to — and Gomez was well-equipped to ensure the launch ticked every box. In a recent email interview, the star says that she tried practically every lip balm, stain, oil, and gloss on the market before making her own, and found that none of them offered what she needed: both hydration and long-lasting color.

The Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oils are a gel-to-oil formula with a stain. They have a beveled sponge tip applicator and glide on the lips with a weightless balmy feel. Once applied the formula feels almost like it thickens into a gel finish. All eight shades are beautiful whether you are a bold lip lover or love a more natural lip look.

Here are my real thoughts on the newest launch from Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty that I have a feeling will be all over your For You page any minute now.

RARE BEAUTY

Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil

A gel-to-oil lip color that hydrates lips, gives great color payoff, and shines like a gloss without being sticky.

Available in 8 shades

The Formula

Because lip oils are still relatively new to the scene, let’s talk formula in case you haven’t encountered one before. To start, there are of course moisturizing oils in the formula—particularly jojoba seed oil and antioxidant-rich sunflower oil. As a bonus, it’s vegan and cruelty-free, while also being free of parabens. Score.

The Feel

Lip oil is the perfect solution if you don’t like the sticky feeling that comes with gloss but still wants a lot of shine.

This lip oil is rather unique in the sense that when you first apply it, it is more of a soft jelly texture, but it does eventually melt into a texture that feels more like a traditional lip oil.

When the sheen wears off you’ll still have a healthy-looking, vivacious pout. And thanks to ingredients like jojoba seed and sunflower seed oil that provide a hydrating barrier and antioxidant protection, it’s not drying like actual lip stains.

The Look

There are currently eight shades to choose from and currently only was able to buy 7 out of the 8 when it launched March 29th on Sephora.

The Rare Beauty Lip Oils come in a range of gorgeous tones, including:

  • Serenity – a warm rose
  • Affection – a muted berry
  • Happy – a cool pink
  • Joy – a muted peach
  • Delight – a rose brown
  • Hope – a nude mauve
  • Wonder – a rose mauve
  • Honesty – a nude brown
Advertisements

This is much more pigmented than your standard lip oil. Most lip oils come with a light wash of sheer color, but with the Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oils, you can expect more of an opaque look.

You get so much color from this oil that even when the shine factor wears off, there is still a pretty flush of color left behind—similar to a lip stain. If you have ever tried Rare Beauty’s famous Soft Pinch Liquid Blush you know that they take pigment seriously.

Don’t believe me? Take it from Selena herself. She explained on the Rare Beauty website, “One swipe and your lips look so full and smooth! I love how easily you can build up the color without it getting sticky.”

The Wear

The one downside of lip oils is they typically don’t last long, but I was pleasantly surprised to see I got a few hours of wear out of this one thanks to the lasting color and it was super easy to touch up even without a mirror handy, making it the perfect travel lip product. This new lip oil really couldn’t have found a spot in my handbag at a better time.

I just want to say the seven colors I have tried are beautiful but I do notice the colors darken on my lips. However lot of stains in general tend to darken or shift in color on me once they set and these look darker on me compared to what I’ve seen on anyone else.

The Verdict

I have to say, thanks to Selena we can end the great lip product debate once and for all. If you want the color and long wear of lipstick, the shine of a gloss, and the moisturizing element of lip oil, then you can find everything you are looking for in one convenient tube of Rare Beauty lip oil.

If you’re looking for a go-to lippie to wear all spring and summer long, add a tube (or two, or three, or four) to your Sephora cart ASAP because I predict this will be the it-product of the season and will sell out FAST every time.

It’s safe to say that finding your go-to, daily mascara is just as important as selecting your best non-comedogenic foundation or ride-or-die sunscreen for your face. It’s a very personal journey and one none of us beauty enthusiasts take lightly—especially when there’s so much choice.

Do you opt for waterproof, brown, lengthening, or super volumizing? And how can you tell which of the best mascaras will deliver lusciously long lashes, without that pesky mascara flaking all over your cheeks before you drop your hard-earned cash on them? All very important questions.

This is why I’ve done the leg work for you when it comes to the Rare Beauty Perfect Strokes mascara, wearing it on the daily, seven days a week. And much like with the Rare Beauty products, I have some thoughts…

MY MAKEUP PREFERENCES

I keep my makeup pretty natural. For my base, I wear a glow filter (usually Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight), followed by Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation, eyebrow gel, blush, and highlighter.

Eye-wise, I keep it pretty minimal, just opting for mascara on a normal day—sometimes I pair it with an all-over eyeshadow, but I’m not an eyeliner gal, despite there being some great eyeliners for beginners out there. So, I rely on my mascara to make me look awake and somewhat put together, while still keeping it natural—so preferably, no clumps in sight

IS THE RARE BEAUTY MASCARA WATERPROOF?

Now, onto the key info, is the Rare Mascara waterproof?

It’s described as having a ‘water-resistant formula,’ so theoretically it should be able to withstand getting caught in a surprise rain shower or a gentle cry sesh. Technically though, it’s not fully waterproof—but I prefer that as it’s easier to remove with a makeup remover or micellar water, without needing to be too vigorous.

HOW TO APPLY THE RARE BEAUTY MASCARA

To apply this mascara, I’d recommend curling your lashes first with your preferred eyelash curler, before then gently wiggling the mascara wand from side to side as you stroke up along your lashes, from root to tip. This side-to-side motion will feather out your lashes and will help to get an even coating on your lashes and avoid clumps.

WHAT’S IN THE RARE BEAUTY MASCARA?

This mascara is formulated with castor oil, which helps to condition and nourish your lashes—plus it’s vegan, cruelty-free, paraben-free, ophthalmologist-tested, dermatologist-tested, and suitable for anyone with sensitive eyes or contact lens wearers.

BEAUTYLEEBAR VERDICT ON THE RARE BEAUTY MASCARA

So, is this Rare Beauty mascara good? My answer is yes. It does everything it promises to do—it’s buildable, comfortable, volumizing, and lasts all day without smudging.

I’ve worn it every day, seven days a week, for over a month, and haven’t experienced any transferring or flaking. I’m also a big fan of its chunky tube, with its soft, matte pink finish. It feels expensive and looks soo cute in my makeup bag.

It’s also easy to apply, even with a slightly large wand, which I wouldn’t necessarily have gone for, but didn’t find it in any way messy or hard to handle. In fact, with every use, it leaves my lashes looking lengthened, voluminous, and curled up—and it lasts all day long, so everything you can ask of a mascara. The formula itself feels great on the lashes as well, not super stiff or brittle.

In honour of seeing @Selena Gomez last night @Rare Beauty event I HAD to try out this little hack😍 #selenagomez #selenagomezmakeup #rarebeauty

This Rare Beauty mascara fends off moisture well (from tears and even sweat from a gym sesh) but comes off like a dream with a bit of micellar water.

My main gripe with this product though is that it’s only available in black—if this came in a soft brown shade, it would be a real game-changer. There’s also the question of the price…

This mascara will set you back $20 which is pretty pricey for a mascara. That being said—like with all of Rare’s line-up—the amount of product you get for the money is generous since the tube is pretty chunky.

Advertisements

So, my final verdict: it’s great and if you’ve been hunting far and wide for a mascara that is both gentle on your eyes but still delivers length and volume, this could be one to try. I will say this though, other mascaras out there are comparable and more inexpensive on the market, but if you’re a Selena stan looking to make another (or your first) Rare Beauty purchase, I’d recommend it for the cute tube alone!

TikTok’s Coquette Trend Is Giving Flirty Energy (& We Love It)— Plus, Some Stunning Inspo

We don’t know about you, but we can’t resist a major TikTok trend, especially one as cute and flirtatious as #CoquetteMakeup. The coquette aesthetic has been gaining MAJOR traction on TikTok for the past year. It’s all about embracing your feminine energy, romanticizing your life, and being oh-so-girly.

Now, #coquettemakeup is making waves, and it makes TOTAL sense since it relies heavily on everyone’s fave product RN, AKA blush. For us, it ticks every box: it’s super cute, easy to achieve, and also customizable. And it appears to have graduated from TikTok and elevated its status to the celeb stratosphere, with icons like Hailey Bieber and Lizzo both experimenting with the trend. So without further ado, here’s everything to know about #coquettemakeup, plus soooo much inspo… we just couldn’t help ourselves; it’s TOO cute.

Advertisements

Okay, let’s start by clarifying WTF a coquette is?! A 17th-century French word, coquette was originally a derogatory name for a flirtatious, attention-seeking woman. Now, however, a few hundred years later, we know that it can be empowering to flirt and that femininity does not equal weakness, so TikTok and Instagram users are reclaiming the word. In its current cultural context, “coquette aesthetic” is a phrase used to describe a style of dress, makeup, and design sensibility inspired by the aesthetics of the 18th and 19th centuries — with a hint of 2010s Tumblr vibes. Think ribbons, fresh flowers woven into braids, lace trim, and all pink everything. It’s hyper-girly with a slight winking, satirical edge.

When it comes to translating the coquette aesthetic to beauty, the flirty, ultra-feminine makeup look hinges on romantic rosy hues and soft-focus finishes. It’s flirtatious, it’s cute, and it’s utterly irresistible. So lean into your DIVINE feminine energy, be a bit of a tease, and have some fun *wink wink.*

Advertisements

If you’re looking for coquette queens to inspire your look, head to Netflix and binge-watch Bridgeton. It’s the ultimate coquette mood board. IRL, celebs like Hailey, Lizzo, and Madison Beer lurrve dipping their toe in coquette territory. And then, of course, you have BeautyTok and FashionTok. The hashtag #coquette currently has over seven billion views, so you won’t be short of inspo. It also leans on other TikTok makeup trends like cold girl makeup, siren eyes, doe eyes, and douyin blush. Ahead, we’re breaking down the key elements of the look and sharing some inspiration.

How To Slay Coquette Makeup Look

Concealed Under-Eyes

When it comes to your complexion, you want a fresh and dewy glow, so opt for a light to medium-coverage foundation with a natural, luminous-skin finish. With Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Liquid Touch, Brightening Concealer is perfect for this look as it has buildable coverage and is perfect to use in place of traditional foundation. We’re obsessed with the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Liquid Luminizer Highlight as it can be applied as a highlighter, or you can add a couple of drops into your foundation for a little glow-getting boost.

Since your complexion should look luminous and youthful, generously concealed under-eyes are a must. We adore the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Under Eye Brightener — use it to brighten up your eye area.

Lots of Blush

There are tons of different ways to interpret the coquette aesthetic, but most takes on the trend revolves around statement blush. Find a pigmented formula like the Soft Pinch Liquid Blush –Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez, and apply it along your cheekbones for a sculpted, rosy glow. You could also opt for a draped blush look, which is when you apply your blush along your cheekbones to your temples and up around your browbone.

Wispy Lashes

Long, wispy lashes are another staple of the trend, perfect for batting. Whether you swear by falsies or prefer a lengthening mascara, be sure to go for a super long, feathery effect. As for the rest of your eye makeup, feel free to play around. Siren’s eyes would look stunning with the other aspects of the coquette look.

Blurred Lips

For the ultimate coquette pout, you want your lips to look full and juicy, but other than that, it’s really up to you. Pink, nude, and berry shades are all great, but you can make any shade work. Stick to shiny, glossy finishes, or if you are a matte lipstick devotée, look for a sheer one. We love the shade of the Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Stay Vulnerable Glossy Lip Balm Nearly Rose – flushed pinkRare Beauty by Selena Gomez Kind Words Lip Liner Strong – rich chocolateRare Beauty by Selena Gomez Lip Soufflé Matte Cream Lipstick Kindness – nude pink or with Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez
Kind Words Matte Lipstick Lively – rose pink. This is the perfect pink combo for the woc girlies.

Coquette Aesthetic Makeup Ideas

It’s a cliché, we know, but when we think hyper-feminine makeup, one color comes to mind, and that’s pink. Yup, when it comes to coquette makeup, think pink and roll with it. We’re talking rosy pink blush, soft pink eye shadow, and glowy skin. A pink monochromatic moment is THE moment, after all.

Coquette Hair Inspo

Of course, no makeup look is complete without a stunning hairstyle, so we had to deliver some coquette hair inspo.  Ribbons and bows translate the coquette vibe effortlessly.

Coquette Nails

As nail art STANS, we couldn’t forget about #nailspo! Coquette nails have garnered rave reviews on TikTok with 35.9 million views! However, there isn’t one nail design that dominates the trend; it’s simply nail art that’s hyper-feminine and pretty. The color palette features pastel pinks, milky nude tones, and of course, lustrous red. As for the design details, there are hearts, lace designs, and pearl adornments. Honestly, could it be any cuter?

Okay, now you know about the coquette trend, the real question is: are you going to try it? Let us know in the comments below.
