We Tried Blake Lively’s 8 Healthy Habits to Live By—Here’s What Happened

We think it’s safe to say we’ve probably all had a crush on Blake Lively at some point. From her Gossip Girl days to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (our personal favorite) or slaying red carpet looks and being adorably funny with husband Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively seems to epitomize a happy and healthy life. Blake looks like the confident and cool girl we all want to be. So how does she do it? Upon further research (AKA looking through all of her interviews we could find online), it turns out, that Blake has eight healthy habits she always sticks to, and since we aspire to be just as happy and healthy as her, we tried them all.

Limit alcohol

Blake likes a party just as much as the rest of us, but she chooses to enjoy them without alcohol. “I don’t like the effects of alcohol, but I like being a part of it,” she said in a recent interview with People Magazine. “I like being social. I like people coming together.” This is perhaps what led her to create her new line of non-alcoholic mixers, Betty Buzz. We usually like to end our Fridays with a glass of wine and dinner with friends, but we also spend some Fridays in bed with Netflix and tea, so we get where she’s coming from.

Our takeaway from Blake’s rule was that no matter the activity, you can still have fun whether alcohol is a part of it or not. We spent last week Friday at a friend’s birthday drinking kombucha. We had so much fun and woke up feeling refreshed and great (which wouldn’t have happened had we opted for a glass of wine instead). Let’s be real: Alcohol can lead to some not-so-great mornings (hangxiety anyone?). Blake’s way of life has made us rethink alcohol and consider opting for a Betty Buzz once in a while. Never skip breakfast

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and Blake agrees. Her trainer Don Saladino told Cosmo that her usual breakfast is a couple of eggs cooked in coconut oil with maybe some vegetables. He also emphasized the importance of starting the day with protein and balancing sugar levels. This week, we tried to incorporate some protein into every breakfast, whether it was eggs, a protein shake, or almond butter on toast. We found that just by adding some form of protein, we felt fuller for longer and didn’t have the crash that usually comes with a sugary morning start. Safe to say, we’ll be sticking to this rule for a while.

Always start the day with hydration

In an interview with Cosmo, Saladino revealed that Blake starts every day with a large glass of water. It may seem like an easy habit, but most of us don’t drink enough water throughout the day. After dehydrating our bodies while sleeping, a glass of water is a great way to get things moving. Staying hydrated has always been something some of us struggled with, especially first thing in the morning; adding another thing to our morning to-do list just seemed overwhelming. But while channeling our inner Blake, we added a few hacks to make it easier: we filled up our water bottle the night before and left it on our bedside table (to make it as easy as possible in the morning) and opted for a water bottle instead of a glass (so we could take it with us when we are running out the door). Starting the day with hydration was a struggle for some of us, but by the end of the week, we did see the difference. We were less tired, and our skin looked more glowy and hydrated.

Prioritize exercise

There’s a reason Blake is such good friends with her trainer instead of just a client: She spends four to five days a week in the gym! While her workout regimen has changed over the years, she has always kept it consistent. Saladino told E! News that some days, Blake trains for an hour, and other days, just for 20 to 30 minutes (celebrities—their schedules are all over the place!). But our biggest takeaway was that Blake maintained consistency: No matter how much time she had, she always fit in movement.

We value incorporating some movement into our daily routine, but unfortunately, hitting the gym four to five times a week was unrealistic for some of us. Instead, we developed a consistent schedule that worked for each of our lives, which meant yoga class every Tuesday, an at-home workout twice a week, and maybe dance class on the weekend. But being Blake for a week taught us that it didn’t matter if we had an hour for a yoga class or 15 minutes for a walk on the beach: The goal is just to move consistently.

Eat a balanced diet (and never count calories!)

According to Saladino, Blake’s diet is a healthy balance of proteins, vegetables, fruits, slow-burning starches like sweet potato, and healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter. And the best part: She’s not tracking her calories or in a strict calorie deficit like you might hear from other celebs. “I don’t think putting someone into a caloric deficit is the right thing to do,” Saladino told Cosmo. “This is why a lot of coaches and people are unsuccessful.” A well-balanced diet is also something we try to incorporate into our weekly routine, so this rule was already practiced. While not every day is the same, planning out our Sunday grocery shopping in advance is always helpful. Trying out new recipes and incorporating the same ingredients into multiple meals also adds variety and reduces the cost we are spending on food too. This is one healthy habit we will be sticking to.

Make room for fun

If you browse through Blake’s Instagram, it’s a combination of gorgeous fashion looks, her family and friends, and, of course, delicious baked goods. Blake has a passion for baking and a strong sweet tooth (we can relate), and so while she sticks to a healthy routine, she still makes time for “fun.” Blake follows an 80/20 rule. This means she eats clean 80% of the time, leaving 20% for indulgences. While it seems tangible, keeping our indulgences to 20% was tough for us. While we try to save indulgences for the weekend, we are big snackers (and love mid-week candy here and there because sometimes, you need to!).

Instead of sticking to a strict 80/20 rule for the sake of becoming Blake Lively, we decided to look into each time we were craving sweets during the week and assess why. Were we bored, stressed, or needing comfort? Or does our body need this right now? If the answer was yes to the latter question, then we indulged. But we noticed that most of the time, we were just bored, and it wouldn’t satisfy us. By the end of the week, we discovered it was easier to limit indulgences because we were more conscious about why we craved them in the first place. But maybe it was more 75/25 than 80/20—we are only humans, after all.

Keep skincare simple

Long before it became a TikTok sensation, Blake was using the affordable skincare brand CeraVe because she also understands the value of good drugstore buys, just like the rest of us. In an interview with People magazine, the star shared a list of her makeup and skincare go-to’s, which included many affordable options, including a Burt’s Bees Chapstick. While she may choose to splurge on a serum, Blake also realizes that not every item in your bathroom cabinet has to be expensive to be effective.

As someone (Lee) who has extremely dry and hormonal skin, it took a while to find the right products for my skin. I was guilty of splurging on expensive creams and toners, only to realize less is always more. Now, I opt for an all-natural cleanser, natural face oils for moisturizer, and a lightweight sunscreen. Blake’s skincare mindset is one I already live by, and while it took many years of experimentation before I got there, I realized everyone’s skin is different, and what works for you may not work for someone else.

Sunscreen is a must-have in every skincare routine. This one is Blake Lively’s go-to!

Beeswax Lip Balm

Blake is a huge fan of this drugstore lip balm.

There’s no such thing as “perfection” in your exercise routine

As a mom of three who travels often and always seems to be on the go, it’s impressive how Blake fits in a sweat almost every day. But sometimes, she isn’t able to stick to her schedule, and she knows that’s OK. “This isn’t about coming in and stepping on the gas and going as hard as you can every workout. That’s the biggest mistake that people make,” Saladino told E! News. “The reality is, it’s never going to be a perfect scenario, right? There are always going to be things getting in your way. That’s just life. Just get in there and move.”

Advertisements

This rule was one of our favorites. Sometimes, there can be a lot of pressure on working out—like you need to be doing an hour, burning a certain number of calories, or going at a certain intensity for it to be effective, but that’s not true. This “rule” took all the pressure off of us on the days when we didn’t have a workout planned. One time, we walked to the grocery store instead of driving. On our lunch breaks, we would opt for a 10-minute yoga stretch. Simply adding a little bit of movement into the days when we weren’t feeling up to a 60-minute workout gave us more energy and took all the pressure and guilt away.

How To Recreate the Viral Hailey Bieber Smoothie on a Budget

If there’s one thing we are always on the lookout for, it’s tips on how to achieve flawless, glowing skin. Luckily, we have celebrities like Hailey Bieber to let us in on their skincare secrets. Well known for her flawless skin, she recently launched her beauty line, Rhode. While Rhode currently has a waitlist, her viral Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie does not.

Launched at Erewhon Market in June, Hailey Bieber’s limited-edition smoothie includes skin-enhancing ingredients such as hyaluronic acid (which, by the way, we did not know you could ingest) and sea moss, which Erewhon described as a “wellness supporting ingredient.” Coming in at $17, this smoothie promises to have your skin glowing from the inside out. If you’re like us and don’t have an Erewhon Market nearby, or if you want to save money (doesn’t everyone?), you can easily re-create the viral smoothie from the comfort of your kitchen. To find out if the smoothie is worth the hype, we tested it out for ourselves.

How to re-create the smoothie

We followed the recipe Vital Proteins shared on their TikTok, which omits the hyaluronic acid and sea moss, making it more budget friendly. Although these two ingredients are the stars of the smoothie show, don’t worry. This recipe is still packed with nutrient-dense flavors that are great for your skin. Almonds contain a nice dose of vitamin E and zinc, while strawberries are good for your heart, and collagen and hyaluronic acid may help your skin cell turnover. Plus, this recipe uses vegan cream instead of dairy, and both maple syrup and dates, sweeteners that have more nutrients than sugar.

That being said, if you want to make the smoothie more authentic to the one sold at Erewhon Market, hyaluronic acid and sea moss are both available to order online. The recipe we followed does call for a strawberry glaze, which you can make yourself. For a more convenient option, it can also be purchased from the store, or you can use an alternative like strawberry jam or preserves.

Once we had our ingredients assembled, it was as simple as tossing them into our Nutribullet and blending until everything was well combined. In the meantime, we used the back of a spoon to spread coconut cream and strawberry glaze onto the sides of our drinking glass. You can skip the aesthetics and put both ingredients at the bottom of your glass for the same effect.

Before trying the smoothie out for yourself, we would be remiss not to mention some quick tips. Depending on your blender, you may need to cut up the dates before blending to save yourself from big chunks of dates. Additionally, make sure to blend the smoothie thoroughly so that the collagen powder is well incorporated. Lastly, while dates, maple syrup, and strawberry glaze contain naturally occurring sugars, the amount this smoothie calls for is something to be mindful of. If you want to make it less sweet, you can simply use only one date or omit the maple syrup or strawberry glaze altogether.

Our thoughts as registered dietitians

We loved the texture of this smoothie. Thanks to the avocado, it was thick and creamy and much fluffier than other smoothies we have tried. The taste reminded us of a strawberry milkshake, and we would recommend this to anyone looking for a delicious post-workout snack or an on-the-go breakfast option.

For us, smoothies are our go-to summer breakfast, and we can see ourselves adding this to our weekly smoothie rotation. we love to toss a handful of greens into our smoothies for an extra nutrient boost, which we plan on doing with this recipe in the future. Chia seeds are our favorite smoothie topping to aid in digestion, and we think they would make an excellent match for this glowing skin smoothie.

Advertisements

While this smoothie does contain some amazing ingredients for your skin (think: healthy fats from the avocado, vitamin C from the strawberries, and collagen for tissue support), we wouldn’t say it’s a magic cure-all for your skincare woes. As always, staying hydrated and eating a well-rounded diet rich in plants and other whole foods will provide essential nutrients to protect and keep your skin healthy.

Author’s Notes

You can replace Collagen Beauty Greens with fresh aloe vera. Aloe vera is a fantastic natural ingredient that helps our skin to retain moisture and improve elasticity. It is full of antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties, which makes it an excellent component to add to your smoothies.

Dates contain nutrients and antioxidants that can delay the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, giving your skin an extra glow.

The Journal Prompt You Should Try Tonight, Based on Your Enneagram Type

The Enneagram test can be an enlightening tool for self-discovery. Knowing your type gives you insight into what motivates, challenges, and fulfills you, well as how you experience life’s ups and downs. If you want to delve a little deeper, pairing journal prompts with your Enneagram type is one of the best ways to process and reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and experiences from the day. By exploring your personality traits through journaling, you can gain a better understanding of yourself and the world around you. Kick off your inner dialogue with one of these journal prompts recommended for each Enneagram type.

Describe in detail an emotion you felt today.

Type Ones strive for perfection in everything they do and often boast a strong sense of self-discipline. Although this type experiences the same range of messy human emotions as everyone else, they may not freely express their anger, sadness, nervousness, or even joy for fear of judgment. Tap into those feelings with a journal prompt that invites you to describe an emotion with as much detail as possible. What provoked this emotion? What did it physically feel like? How did you react in your words or actions?

How did I take care of myself today?

Empathetic, selfless Twos are all about taking care of others, but they tend to brush off their own needs. Making time for self-care isn’t always high on their to-do lists, so this journal prompt encourages Twos to reflect on moments throughout the day when they prioritized their well-being. It could be as simple as describing a nutritious meal or the feeling after a long, steamy shower. Make a list of the ways you put yourself first today, as a reminder that your nurturing nature should extend inward as well.

What value did I contribute to the world today?

The Achiever’s basic desire is to feel valuable and worthwhile, and they often seek this feeling through personal accomplishments. The challenge for this type is to separate their self-worth from the attention of others and other exterior signs of success. Instead of focusing on specific achievements or tasks on your to-do list, consider the value you brought to other people or your environment today. Perhaps you made someone’s day with a small act of kindness, or maybe you simply tended to your houseplants and contributed to the growth of new life. Practice finding the value in your daily doings, no matter how insignificant they may seem.

Advertisements

Describe your day using as many sensory details as possible.

Type Fours can be highly emotive and introspective, which means they tend to spend a lot of time in their heads. Rather than ruminating on your feelings, challenge yourself to focus instead on the concrete details of your day. Think through something you did that day in terms of what it looked, smelled, sounded, and physically felt like. Aim to describe things exactly as they are, without exaggerating or minimizing. The goal is to practice being fully present in whatever state you’re in.

How did I step back and unplug today?

With their intense focus and unquenchable curiosity, it’s easy for Type Fives to get preoccupied and distracted from daily life. If you’ve ever gotten lost in a book or fixated on learning a new skill, you know what I’m talking about. For this journal prompt, think about what you did today to unwind and give yourself a mental break. This could entail cooking a favorite meal, chatting with a friend, or simply going for a walk. Jot down both the feelings and physical sensations that came along with this activity.

What is the best thing that happened to me today?

A Type Six is prone to worst-case scenario thinking. Craving safety and security, they have a habit of running through all the “what ifs” in a situation, fixating on problems that haven’t appeared yet. If you feel that anxiety creeping in, flip your fear-based thinking and focus instead on the best thing that happened that day. Did something turn out better than you expected? Did you solve a problem that was stressing you out or find a moment of unexpected joy? Describe the good in each day as a reminder that your anxious thoughts aren’t always your reality.

When did I feel most present and grounded today?

Busy-body Enthusiasts thrive on adventure and excitement, but while they’re flying from one activity to the next, they may forget to pause and enjoy the moment. This journal prompt invites you to slow down and think about how you managed your attention that day. Tune into the times when you felt wholly present and grounded in the current moment. What were you doing? Who were you with? How can you bring that same mentality to your interactions tomorrow?

Advertisements

How did I practice openness today?

Self-reliant Type Eights prefer to take charge of themselves rather than yield to others. Always wanting to be in control of the situation, they often struggle with vulnerability. Instead of shying away from it, hone on that feeling and consider how you opened yourself up to others today. Did you accept help when you needed it, share something that made you feel vulnerable or simply choose to listen before speaking? Did it make you feel stronger or less so?

How did I show up for myself today?

The Peacemaker’s agreeable nature means they’re more likely to go along with others than stir the pot by standing up for themselves. They tend to tune out their own needs and wants as a way to keep the peace, which can end up creating more problems in the long run. For this journal prompt, turn your focus inward and consider how you participated in the world around you. Did you assert your own opinion, advocate for your needs, and lean in instead of zoning out? If you struggled with this today, how can you do better tomorrow?

Zendaya Swears by 5 Wellness Hacks—And We Tried Them All

She continues to slay it on the red carpet and on top best-dressed lists while starring on the big and small screens. We all know her as the wild child aka Rue, who marches to the beat of her drum in Euphoriafor which she nabbed an Emmy Award, might we add. Of course, we are referring to none other than Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman (AKA Zendaya).

Advertisements

Courtesy of Vogue, we took a deep dive into Zendaya’s life: a Disney star turned full-fledged celeb, singer, self-proclaimed workaholic, and (Virgo) perfectionist, Auntie Daya to her nieces, painter, homebody, and true-crime podcast junkie. Between her many talents and interests, leading role in Euphoria, and starring in cinematic roles, it left us wondering how she finds the time to stay healthy. Thanks to an interview with Cosmopolitan and various other sources, we got the inside scoop. Read on for five healthy habits Zendaya swears by and our experience taking a stab at them.

1. Find a workout that’s fun for you

Let’s be real: We know all too well that if a workout doesn’t bring the fun factor, we’re not sticking with it, and Zendaya agrees (we knew we loved her!). In a YouTube interview with Justine Magazine, Zendaya confessed to being gym-averse, so she gets her workouts in by doing activities she loves dancing and choreography. When she does hit the gym, you better believe she’s making it entertaining. Case in point: Zendaya doing plank variations on a medicine ball and killer Pilates movements.

Our experience: Until a few months ago, you could say we were gym rats, and lifting heavy weights was not our happy place. But we found that we had to continue digging deep to keep it up, and the motivation waned—it just wasn’t fun anymore. Taking a cue from Zendaya, we switched it up with some at-home workouts that deliver the perfect combo of sweat and joy (cycling and yoga classes FTW) and found our second wind.

2. Discover what motivates you to exercise

Believe it or not, celebrities sometimes need a little push to work out too. Zendaya shared her unconventional way of keeping herself accountable on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert: wearing various wigs she had collected from her red-carpet appearances and showing up to her gym as a different character. OK, so most of us don’t have wigs lying around, but you get the idea. Identify what helps you stay consistent with your workouts and get to it. Whether it’s a ride-or-die sweat buddy, your satisfying post-workout smoothie, or booking a non-refundable fitness class, use it to your advantage to work out on the reg.

Our experience: This was a no-brainer for us—there’s nothing like a new, flattering workout set to pull us away from a binge-watching marathon and get the body moving. While we can’t get a fresh ‘fit for every workout, we use the next must-have waiting in our shopping cart as an incentive (and, trust us, there are enough to keep me going for months).

3. Practice body positivity

A body positivity advocate through and through, Zendaya is all about self-love and being authentic. “There is no such thing as ugly—that’s a word that doesn’t enter my vocabulary,” she said in an interview with New You. “It’s important to find out who you are and love who you are … It’s very freeing when you’re just like, ‘Yo, I’m just going to do me!’” And she does just that—and with style, no less! Zendaya called out Modeliste Magazine for retouching her photos to make her hips and torso appear slimmer than IRL. The magazine later released the issue with the original, unedited images from her cover shoot (now that’s a happy ending if there ever was one).

Our experience: TBH, we have a lot to learn from Zendaya. We still working on loving ourselves as we are and not chasing an idea of perfection, we have lingering in our heads every day. Our go-to practice? Catching ourselves when we are nit-picking our body and flipping the script by being grateful for what our body provides: the gift to exercise, a canvas for our latest fashion finds, and the ability to enjoy (mostly) all the delicious foods.

4. Make your meals balanced and eat what you’re craving

Zendaya has been a vegetarian since she was 9 years old, and she gets creative about fitting veggies into her diet. Enter: the summer rice salad recipe she shared with Seventeen that is built around a healthy mix of fats, protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. But don’t be fooled by the rice salad recipe—she’s also VIP status with Postmates (I am not exaggerating, just read Postmates’ blog). She admitted to Harper’s Bazaar that she doesn’t cook out of laziness and dislike for following directions (that’s the kind of relatable celeb we love!). “I can have anything I want; that’s the beauty of ordering food,” she said.

Our experience: Zendaya’s diet reminded us that it is all about balance. We tend to fall into the all-or-nothing trap, so we channeled our inner Zendaya, alongside the rice salads we made. We would rate it an 8/10 for flavor and ease and finish off our lunches with DEUX Cookie Dough (the latest obsession) or a couple of chocolate peanut butter cups. We are keeping Zendaya’s rice salad in our summer meal rotation, but when laziness strikes and the chopping of vegetables is just too much to wrap our head around, door dash it is—no guilt or shame here.

Advertisements

5. Opt for matcha over other caffeinated beverages

It’s no secret that The BeautyLeeBar beauties are obsessed with Starbucks, and it turns out Zendaya is too. Her go-to Starbucks order? A Venti iced matcha green tea latte with coconut milk. And that’s her only source of caffeine—she told Harper’s Bazaar that she goes sans coffee, soda, and energy drinks. Zendaya may be onto something: Matcha boosts your energy at a slower pace than coffee and contains L-theanine, an amino acid found in the green tea plant that can reduce stress.

Our experience: We will admit that we are a bit of a matcha snob, so we were hesitant to give what’s been dubbed “The Zendaya” a go. While it was too sweet for some of us and we usually take our matcha with Oat milk, we like the coconut twist and would order it again to appease a post-meal sugar craving. But if there’s one main takeaway from Zendaya and her workout and diet tried-and-true, it is to do what works for you.
