WHAT ARE FLAT TUMMY SHAKES?

Flat Tummy Shakes are meal replacement shakes made by Flat Tummy Co., a brand very well known for their de-bloating detox teas. They introduced this meal replacement program as an easy and safe alternative to losing weight and getting back on track. Its magic ingredient is clinically proven Citrimax, a dietary supplement used to burn fat and slim down the waistline. The shakes are the perfect addition to a healthy lifestyle no matter how big or small your goals are. There’s simply nothing easier than shaking up and drinking 1-2 of them a day.

The shakes are great if you have a special occasion coming up, your weight loss has plateaued, or you simply need a nudge in the right direction. They are vegan, dairy-free, soy-free, and gluten-free, as well as having a digestive blend of enzymes and probiotics, omega 3’s, and six grams of fibre.

MY CURRENT LIFESTYLE

I am generally an active person, can’t stay still for too long. With my job, I’m always on the move. I am always on my feet and stuff. I’m not one to attend a gym on a regular basis but I do have fitness apps that teach me exercises to do at home. Whether it be a 30-45 minute cardio workout 2-4 times a week, taking long walks, or being sexually active, I consider myself fairly active.

When it comes to my “diet”, I love choosing from my many options of tea to enjoy with my meal preps. I am learning and experimenting with different healthy smoothies that is flavorful and works for me. Flattummyco Shakes is quick and easy, just the way I like it, all while still enjoying the things I love.

THE 4 WEEK PROGRAM

What I love about the Flat Tummy Shakes is that they are just like having one of my green smoothies, only they’re packed with a lot more good stuff. They’re quick and easy, and a much better option than loading up on carbs. Instead of grabbing a croissant in the morning, you can have a shake and still feel full. I noticed right away that I had more energy, less cravings, and I was feeling less bloated. The shakes have 20 grams of plant based protein, 22 vitamins and minerals and over 50 fruits and veggies – a definite “oh she glows” kind of drink.

Having tried other protein shakes in the past, I knew what to expect about the taste. I was given Vanilla and Strawberry flavor shakes, so with that I was able to add extras to the shake if I felt the shake was too bland. The key to really enjoying these shakes is to make sure that you really shake it! Make sure all of the powder is blended into your liquid of choice. You can use regular filtered water, almond milk, coconut milk – you decide. You can also whip it up in a blender and add fresh or frozen fruits for a better tasting shake. What I love is the proportional packets so I don’t have to get elbow deep scooping powder out of giant tubs, and the packets super portable! I just tuck one in my purse for later if I’m having a late morning and shake it up on the go.

Personally, I enjoyed the drink by mixing it with almond milk and chugging it down – no time to waste! During the first few weeks of taking one shake a day, I would still snack between meals. In the last two weeks, there were no more urges to snack. The cravings became less and less and eventually diminished. Keep in mind that I cut out sugar and gluten, so I was already consuming a healthy, high protein diet otherwise known as a paleo or whole 30 diet. I immediately felt full afterwards and it really was just enough for me. You can replace up to two meals a day with the flat tummy shakes!

THE RESULTS

My expectations with any weight loss supplement is that bloating would decrease significantly – and that it did. Consider it to be water weight, if you will, but I was definitely lighter and able to ‘suck in’ my tummy and feel comfortable in my skin by the end of the four week program. The shakes made me want to keep up a healthy regime, by making the right meal choices and drinking plenty of water instead of snacking. Funny how the mind plays tricks on you like that, making you think that you are hungry when really, you are thirsty!

After taking the meal replacement shakes every day for four weeks, I have lost a total of 20 lbs, which is a lot for me! The combination of summertime, constantly going out with friends, eating fresh fruits and veggies and staying hydrated, all played a significant role. But the real winners here are the Flat Tummy Shakes. They got rid of my bloating and reduced my appetite, making me feel comfortable in a swimsuit. And it definitely helped me to get my mind off of food! It’s a much healthier alternative to skipping meals (don’t ever skip breakfast!) and you will get results, the healthy way.

Flat Tummy Co. Shake It Baby meal replacement shakes come in Vanilla, Strawberry and Chocolate flavors, which one would you choose? They used to sell Matcha, don’t know what happened but I hope Flattummyco brings it back!

If you’re looking for extra help with results, definitely check out Flat Tummy Co.’s website and order a few shakes. And guess what?! They’ve got a massive 25% sale going on right now!! So if you want to try this product, that’s the time to get your hands on some!

Spotlight on: Citric Acid

Citric acid is in just about everything from skincare products, to food, to floor cleaner. While lemons aren’t really something you want to be rubbing all over your face, citric acid is something very different and is actually quite beneficial!

Here is what you need to know about citric acid and how to incorporate it into your routine.

What is Citric Acid?

Citric acid is found in, you guessed it, citrus fruits, and is what gives them their acidic flavor. Citric acid was first isolated in 1784 by the Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who was able to crystallize it from lemon juice.

And not long after, it started to appear in just about everything but particularly in cosmetics and skincare products. In 2016 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP) stated that citric acid was used in almost every category of cosmetic products and had over 10,000 reported uses.

It is also used as a popular flavor and preservative agent in foods, soft drinks, and candies.

What Are AHAs?

Citric acid is what’s known as an alpha hydroxy acid (or AHA) in the skincare world. The most basic definition of an HA is a carboxylic acid, which is an organic acid that has at least one carboxyl (carbon double-bonded to oxygen) group. However, that general definition includes unrelated compounds like retinoic acid, L-ascorbic acid, and azelaic acid. Therefore, further qualifications (like alpha, beta, etc) need to be identified.

AHAs are non-abrasive, leave-on exfoliators that are traditionally more effective and gentle than traditional scrubs. Sun damage and overly dry or oily skin can hinder your body’s ability to properly shed dead skin cells. These obstructions can cause skin concerns like dullness, clogged pores, milia, texture, and breakouts. Using an exfoliant can help your skin clear out the dead cells to make room for the new, healthy ones. Chemical exfoliants help to prevent breakouts and premature aging and reduce the appearance of pores.

How Can Citric Acid Benefit Your Skin?

AHAs like glycolic acid and lactic acid can be incredibly potent, and sometimes a little too much for those with sensitive skin. That is where citric acid can be helpful! It is like the training bra of AHAs: It doesn’t really do as much as its fellow acids, but it’s made for people who don’t need the support older girls do.

But what exactly are the benefits of citric acid for the skin? Citric acid (like most all AHAs) can help to brighten skin, shrink pores, treat acne, and correct dark spots and fine lines.

Before it started being added to formulas for its exfoliating abilities, citric acid used to be used to keep the pH range of skincare products in check. The pH of cosmetics and skincare products is important because the skin’s normal pH is slightly acidic. A low acidic pH can cause ingredients to be more irritating for those with sensitive skin.

Is It Safe?

The terms “citric” and “acid” are intimidating on their own but can be downright scary when used together. Especially when it comes to something that you’re putting on your face! But according to The Derm Review, it is perfectly safe to use on the skin! “The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel reviewed scientific literature and data on the safety of citric acid and its salts and ester in 2014. This data revealed that at concentrations used in cosmetics and personal care products, citric acid and its salts and esters were not eye irritants, nor did they cause skin irritation or allergic skin reactions. Thus, CIR concluded that the available scientific data showed that citric acid, its salts, and esters were safe under current conditions of use in cosmetics and personal care products.”

Some people get freaked out by citric acid because they know that lemons are highly irritating for the skin. And while, yes, you can absolutely go overboard with citric acid, it’s safe to use.

Just be cautious, especially if you have sensitive skin. The thing with citric acid is that it can be intense. Let’s put it this way: How will you know if you’re using too much? Side effects of overuse include stinging, burning, and irritation.

If you’re still unsure, always do a patch test first to see how your skin reacts. If you don’t see any irritation or redness, start to slowly introduce it into your routine. Don’t use AHAs the same night you use retinoids or physical exfoliants because that can lead to serious damage to your skin’s barrier!

Bottom Line

Citric acid can be an effective chemical exfoliant for those with sensitive skin. I don’t find it as effective as glycolic or lactic acid, however, but if you have tried those and found them to be too irritating, citric acid could be a great alternative!

SELF-SOOTHING PRACTICES Everyone Should Know

You feel raw and emotions are running high. You’ve had a stressful week at work, an over-the-top family weekend gathering, or a falling out with a close friend. You know you need some “me time,” and that it’s clearly a moment for you to regroup. What are your go-tos to reset? Your usual Netflix binge and a tub of ice cream sounds like a slippery slope hurtling toward a shame spiral. Instead, you may want to add some new self-soothing tools to your Honor Thyself Toolbox.

Here are some ways for you to productively reclaim balance to your nervous system and practice extreme self-care for those moments in life when you need it the most.

Give Yourself a Break

If you’re in need of some self-soothing, this is certainly not the moment to take an inventory of your life and your failings. Bring yourself into soft focus by practicing an important self-soothing tool: speaking to yourself with kindness and compassion. I often say to clients, when the proverbial mess hits the fan, “How much more can you love yourself right now, in this moment?” Loving and accepting who you are is a big part of emotional intelligence, especially when you feel raw and vulnerable. And positive self-talk is a valuable skill that can be developed over time. It’s learning to speak to yourself lovingly, even when you feel down, less-than, and at odds with the world around you, and sometimes that feels counterintuitive. So, crank up the kindness and give yourself some props.

Clean and Clear

Clear your home, your heart, your body, and your intimate space:
• Sometimes putting on some music and tidying or organizing feels good to the soul! Making your sacred space beautiful can be uplifting and soothing. Lighting candles and putting flowers around your home once you’re done shifts a mood and can be deeply satisfying. Don’t forget to fire up the sage and to Palo Santo every room, releasing any old and stuck vibes lingering about. We don’t need any outside energies running interference on the home front.

• Often, we get cluttered on the inside too, and we’re in need of an inner Kondo session. You can release old, pent-up feelings by processing them through writing about what’s going on in your head, clearing away the cobwebs of heart and mind, so you can be up to speed with you.

• A purifying soak in a warm tub, with Epsom salt for 20 minutes, can literally draw toxins out of your system. Next-level self-soothing is adding baking soda and essential oils to the mix. And a “psychic shower” is always in order: when you allow the shower to pour over you while visualizing the water clearing all that you no longer need. Just imagine everything you were carrying around being blissfully washed away, spiraling down the drain, gone forevermore.

Hobby It Out

Make a list of things you can do with your hands that you’ve always wanted to, but haven’t made the time for. And then try them out. Painting, jewelry-making, vision boarding, coloring, or even cooking can get super creative. When you tap into your artistic self, the intuitive part of your brain becomes engaged and a calming sense of well-being can have its way with you. Order what you need ahead of time and store it in your closet for that rainy day. Creating itself is soothing, calming, and way more constructive than a binge-tastic Lifetime couch potato run (although that has its merits too).

The Center Is Where It’s At

The center being you, your inner core, your internal compass, your heart center—when you’re operating from the highest, best aspect of yourself. That’s your center. The goal is to live from that place in every area of life, in all circumstances. And that takes practice because it’s not our go-to. So, when we’re agitated or drained, we recalibrate, knowing nothing “out there” is going to soothe us at a soul level. Only we can do that for ourselves, by turning inward for solutions when we really want to look outside of ourselves for the quick fix. And every time we do this, we strengthen that all-important connection to ourselves, at the deepest level of being.

We can learn, over time, to lean into who we are, knowing we have our own back, we are our own best friend, and that every other relationship in our life flows from that place of self-love and true power. So, notice when you feel shaken up, and get quiet. Be with yourself, check in with yourself, and ask what you need next. Speak to yourself with kindness, the same as you would with a child you cared for deeply, who’s needing love and direction. Remind yourself that your relationship to you is the only constant there will ever be. This is the self-soothing master class: be with you, stay close to you, tune in to you, and treat yourself with all the love and respect you deserve. You’ll be amazed how this practice will radically shift your life and open you up to all good things, up-leveling you in ways you never knew were possible.

The truth is, honoring ourselves and self-soothing can mean many things to different people: taking yourself out to a wonderful dinner at your favorite restaurant, going to a day spa for pampering, sitting on a park bench watching dogs and children play with abandon, immersing yourself in a great book, meditating while listening to a great guided visualization. At the end of the day, it’s about taking time to fill up your well that’s dry—and not going to the hardware store for milk. We pause when agitated or on empty, recognize it’s time for some radical self-care, and move into gentle action around our vulnerability. Self-soothing is how we shift into alignment with who we are. And as you continue to expand your self-soothing toolbox, you will ultimately develop a deeper relationship to amazing you.
