Barbie Pink may have had a tight grip on our closets this summer, but it’s headed toward retirement this fall.
Its replacement? Red.
Particularly lipstick red (or cherry red, tomato red, crimson red—whatever red speaks to your autumnal urges, really). In a sea of the usual fall neutrals, lipstick red is the much-needed pop of color that will satiate any longing for the hot pinks of summer.
Way back in February, the runways gave us a glimpse of how to wear the shade for fall. Tory Burch, Stella McCartney, Gucci, The Row, and Ferragamo all had the bright hue on display in outfits ranging from classic knits to slinky dresses.
Wearing red can be a love-it-or-hate-it experience.
For some, it’s too bold, too bright, too aggressive—that is until you know how to mix it into your wardrobe. If a head-to-toe, lipstick-red moment isn’t for you, opt for a pair of boots, a sweater, or a handbag to complement a neutral look, or dial the red down a bit to a merlot or burgundy shade.
